Your Path to Adopting or Fostering a Greyhound
-
Foster Care
Foster carers are the “backbone” to the BTG program and are an integral part of the fostering and adoption process.
Fostering involves training the dog to adapt to a home environment. This includes providing basic obedience training and care, similar to raising a puppy, but with adult dogs.
Fostering greyhounds is a deeply rewarding experience, offering the satisfaction of knowing you are making a positive impact on their lives and helping them find a loving forever home.
Benefits of Fostering:
Adaptation: Help the greyhound adjust to a home environment, transitioning from kennel to couch.
Training: Provide basic obedience training and care, ensuring the greyhound becomes a well-adjusted companion.
Socialization: Teach and train the dogs to socialize with all dogs, big and small, as well as other people.
Evaluation allows you to assist the BTG team with determining which family the greyhound is best suited to.
Flexibility: Foster when you want!
Support: Receive all necessary supplies and 24/7 support throughout the foster period, which generally lasts around 8 weeks (or longer, depending on each dog).
Enrichment: Enjoy taking the greyhound to beaches, walks, car rides, socialising and witnessing their excitement and curiosity.
Fulfillment: Experience the joy of watching these beautiful dogs blossom into family pets.
When the perfect home is found, foster carers assist in meeting the greyhound’s potential new family and support their adoption, creating the next chapter in the greyhound’s life story. Plus, you'll make lots of new greyhound friends!

Adoption
Adopting a greyhound is a wonderful way to provide a loving home to a retired racing dog.
Greyhounds are known for their gentle and affectionate nature, making them excellent companions for families and individuals alike.
They adapt well to a home environment and enjoy lounging around the house and being a “couch potato”.
BTG greyhounds have already been fostered in a home for 8+weeks, trained, and are ready to transition into their new home.
Most have graduated to muzzle exemption, however there are a few that may not have graduated just yet, for whatever reason.
This will be explained to you should you choose a greyhound who needs to be muzzled in public.
All greyhounds are beautiful. Muzzle or unmuzzled, all deserve their forever family.
Adoption Process:
Application: Start by filling out an adoption application – see link below
Home Visit: BTG will conduct a home visit to ensure your home is suitable for a greyhound.
Pat N Chat: You'll have the opportunity to meet your potential new friend to ensure you are the perfect match.
Support: BTG provides post-adoption support for 4 weeks after you take your new friend home, we are here to help you and your new greyhound adjust.
If for any reason you can not keep your adopted greyhound, we will take them back into our program and assist them to find a new home.
Adopting a greyhound not only provides a loving home for a retired racer but also enriches your life with a loyal and affectionate companion.
